Ten Steps to Potty Training Success

When you and your child are ready to begin potty training, choose to begin on a weekend -- preferably a long one. The more time you have to dedicate to potty training your child, the better.

1. Purchase a digital timer with an alarm.

2. With encouragement and enthusiasm, have your child sit on the potty. Have him sit for as long as he will sit. What’s important is that he actually sits on the potty.

3. Read a book, sing a song – do whatever you can to get him to sit there longer. The longer he sits, the more likely he will potty.

4. No matter whether your child pees or not, set the digital timer for 15 minutes once he gets off the potty.
5. Leave his diaper and pants off.

6. Tell your child when the timer beeps, it means it’s time to sit on the potty again. This puts the directive on the timer, rather than you.

7. If your child pees before the timer beeps, re-set the timer for 15 minutes.

8. When the timer beeps, tell your child it’s time to sit on the potty.

9. Repeat this process throughout the next few days.

10. Give your child praise, high-fives, potty parades, or even create your very own potty dance! If you create excitement and fun when your child pees on the potty, he will continue the behavior.
