5 Potty Training Tips for Parents

Before you begin potty training, there are a few things you can do to increase your child's chance of potty training success. These five potty training tips will help get you started:

Dispose of Poop In the Potty
Whenever your child poops in his/her diaper, have your child follow you to the bathroom and watch you dispose of the poop in the toilet. Tell your child that "poop goes in the potty".

Introduce Your Child to Flushing
When you dispose of your child's poop from the diaper to the potty, flush the toilet or let him/her flush it. You can also do this when you use the toilet. By getting your child to see the flushing action or even facilitate the flushing himself/herself, your child will not become afraid of the flushing action. It will also help your child to become familiar and comfortable with the toilet.

Watch for the Signs of Potty Readiness
Keep an eye on your child and note for signs that he/she may be ready to begin potty training. Some signs of potty training readiness may include your child stopping what he/she is doing and reacting to the release of the urine or poop. Some children may hide in a corner or closet or immediately ask to be changed after soiling the diaper. Know the signs your child is ready for the potty so you can assure potty training success.

Create a Kid-Friendly Bathroom
If you create a kid-friendly bathroom in your home, your child will be more likely to want to use the toilet and enjoy doing so. Place your child's favorite books in a basket in the bathroom. Include a headset with some CDs your child likes. Make pottying fun and your child won't be so resistant to using the toilet.

Teach Your Boy to Pee Sitting Before Standing
While learning to use the potty, boys can be very messy. Additionally, your son will need to sit on the potty to poop anyway. It is for both these reasons that you should begin potty training sitting down, and then move to standing to pee once your son has mastered the use of the potty.
